Cavanagh is a secluded, developing community in far south-west Edmonton, within the Heritage Valley area. The community is named after Terry Cavanagh, former city councillor and Edmonton's first native-born mayor. Cavanagh is surrounded to the north, west, and south by the Blackmud Creek Ravine, and borders on the Calgary Trail corridor to the east. The only two connections into the community are 30 Avenue SW, leading into the Heritage Valley Town Centre, and 103a Street, leading north to Ellerslie Road near the intersection with Calgary Trail. The community began development in the late 2010s, and housing here is planned to be primarily low-density single-family detached homes, with some duplexes, townhouses, and low-rise condo buildings. The population at the 2016 census was 0.
Cavanagh's location allows easy access across south and east Edmonton via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road, and Calgary Trail also provides a quick commute to Nisku, Leduc, and the Edmonton International Airport. Many commercial amenities are found nearby, including around the intersection of Ellerslie Road and James Mowatt Trail, at the Heritage Valley Town Centre, and a little further at Currents at Windermere or South Edmonton Common. Extensive green space exists within Cavanagh already, beginning with the Blackmud Creek Ravine nearly surrounding the community. Further, several ponds and parks are planned with interconnected multi-use trails and a central school area. Meanwhile, Dr. Lila Fahlman School and the future Dr. Anne Anderson High School are located in adjacent communities.
