Castle Downs is a large area plan in north-west Edmonton, comprised of eleven communities: Baranow, Baturyn, Beaumaris, Caernarvon, Canossa, Carlisle, Chambery, Dunluce, Elsinore, Lorelei, and Rapperswill. Each of these is named for a castle in the old countries of Europe. The area’s boundaries are found at 137 and 153 Avenues to the south, 127 Street to the west, the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the north, and at 97 Street and Castle Downs Road to the east. The Castle Downs Outline Plan was approved in 1971, with a northward extension added in 1983. Some communities, especially in the south, developed through the 1970s and 80s, while the northern-most communities began development in the 1990s or 2000s, and some are still continuing construction today. Housing through the area is mixed, with a majority of single-family detached homes. Other real estate in Castle Downs, especially in newer communities near the Anthony Henday Drive ring road, includes townhouses and low-rise condo buildings, though some older communities contain clusters of higher-density development around parks and major sites as well. The south-western part of Castle Downs is commercial, as well as the central area and the north-west, and there are other convenience plazas also scattered around the area. The total population of Castle Downs is just under 40,000.

Castle Downs' location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of north and west Edmonton via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road or Yellowhead Trail, which open up easy access to services around Edmonton. 97 Street also offers a quick commute into downtown Edmonton. Castle Downs residents are served by several large shopping centres: one at 137 Avenue around 127 Street, another in the centre of Castle Downs at 153 Avenue and Castle Downs Road, the Newcastle Shopping Centre at 127 Street and 167 Avenue, and the Eaux Claires Shopping Centre across 97 Street south of 167 Avenue. Each of these locations offers groceries, banks, coffee, restaurants, and numerous other stores and services. Other scattered convenience plazas throughout Castle Downs offer local amenities. There are numerous parks and green spaces spread throughout Castle Downs, as well as countless small lakes and ponds. A central district park provides an arena, YMCA, cricket and rugby ptiches, skate park, and splash park. The area also offers a wide variety of schools and churches.
