Carter Crest is a community in south-west Edmonton, named for Robert I. Carter, a Canadian government agent who advised Americans on immigration prospects in Canada. He was very active in local politics and community initiatives for several decades at the beginning of the 20th century. The community's boundaries are found at Rabbit Hill Road to the north-east, Terwillegar Drive to the west, and a utility corridor to the south. Development in Carter Crest took place throughout the 1990s, and housing in the community is primarily made up of single-family detached homes, with these accounting for more than 70% of Carter Crest real estate. The remainder are duplexes and townhouses. The population is 1,622, with the vast majority of Carter Crest residents owning their homes.

Carter Crest's location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via the Anthony Henday Drive ring road and Whitemud Drive, a short drive south and north respectively, which open up easy access to services around Edmonton. Carter Crest residents are served by nearby amenities in both directions, around the intersection of 23 Avenue and Rabbit Hill Road and on the other side of Terwillegar Drive. Together, these provide a Save-On-Foods, Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, gyms, banks, food options, shops, a branch of the Edmonton Public Library, and much more. Further amenities can be found a short drive away at the Currents at Windermere, which offers many of the larger commercial amenities. South Edmonton Common and Southgate Centre are also located nearby. There is extensive green space spread throughout Carter Crest, including several park areas and multi-use trails leading into the Whitemud Creek Ravine and the adjacent parks around the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre. Mother Margaret Mary Catholic High School, Archbishop Joseph MacNeil Catholic Elementary/Junior High School, and Lillian Osborne High School are all located around the recreation centre.
