Capilano is a community in east Edmonton, named as an adaptation of the Salish “people of Hiap”. Several instances of the same name are found in North Vancouver, where “Capilano” was the hereditary name of the Chief of the Squamish. The community’s boundaries are found blending into the Gold Bar community to the east above Gold Bar Park, at the North Saskatchewan River valley to the north and west, and 106 Avenue to the south. The community was developed primarily in the 1950s, continuing into the 60s. The community is made up almost entirely of single-family detached homes, with a few scattered duplexes. The population is 2,534, with the vast majority of Capilano residents being homeowners.

Capilano’s location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton, located across the river to the west, Concordia University, and the University of Alberta, as well as the trendy Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona district. Extensive industrial employment areas are also within a short drive, whether in north-east, east, or south Edmonton. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby, whether at Capilano Mall or the nearby Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre, as well as in the greater downtown area. There are also local conveniences within Capilano and nearby. Capilano is half-surrounded by green space, with the river valley extending up into the Gold Bar Ravine. In this ravine, you'll find Gold Bar Park, offering extensive multi-use trails, off-leash areas, picnic facilities, two lakes, and a bridge linking to the larger Rundle Park. Several further parks within Capilano or on the river banks offer sports fields, a playground, skating rink, tennis courts, and the Capilano Community League. Suzuki Charter School and St. Gabriel Elementary School are located within Capilano, and the Hardisty School and Hardisty Fitness and Leisure Centre are located immediately across 106 Avenue.
