Canora is a community in west Edmonton, originally part of the Town of Jasper Place and annexed into Edmonton in 1964. The school was named in a contest, with the community taking its name soon after. The winner, an eighth-grade student, took the name from the first letters of the old Canadian Northern Railway line near the school. The boundaries of Canora are found at 156 and 149 Streets in the west and east, Stony Plain Road in the south, and 107 Avenue in the north. Development here began in the 1930s, continuing through the 70s. Low-rise apartments are prevalent near 156 Street and near Stony Plain Road, while the remainder of the community is comprised mostly of single-family detached homes and duplexes. The population is 3,174, with the majority of Canora residents being renters.
Canora’s location allows easy access to many industrial employment areas throughout the west end, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive away along Stony Plain Road. Many commercial amenities can be found along Stony Plain Road, within Canora or nearby, and the Mayfield Common is located just west of the community. Here, you’ll find a Save-On-Foods, HomeSense, Jysk, and numerous other stores, services, restaurants, and more. Also, just south of Canora are a Safeway, London Drugs, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, and other stores. Canora Park offers several sports fields and a tennis court, as well as the Canora Community League. Canora’s schools are the Holy Cross Académie Internationale and Brightview School.
