Callaghan is an oddly-shaped community in far south-west Edmonton, within the Heritage Valley area. Callaghan's boundaries are found at 30 Avenue SW to the south, the Blackmud Creek Ravine to the east, and James Mowatt Trail to the northwest. The community was developed quickly in the late 2000s, and roughly one-third of the real estate here is made up of single-family detached homes, with a further one-third found in low-rise condos. The remainder of homes in Callaghan are made up of duplexes and townhouses. The population is 3,559, with the majority of Callaghan residents being homeowners.

Callaghan's location allows easy access across south and east Edmonton via the nearby Anthony Henday Drive ring road, and Calgary Trail also provides a quick commute to Nisku, Leduc, and the Edmonton International Airport. Many commercial amenities are found nearby, including around the intersection of Ellerslie Road and James Mowatt Trail. Here, you'll find a Sobeys, Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, eateries, banks, and more. The Heritage Valley Town Centre is located to the west of Callaghan and offers more big-box stores and other conveniences. Currents at Windermere or South Edmonton Common are also located nearby. Extensive green space exists within Callaghan, beginning with the Blackmud Creek Ravine bordering the community, continuing along an interconnected network of multi-use trails, and finishing with ponds and parks. Johnny Bright School, Monsignor Fee Otterson Elementary/Junior High School, Roberta MacAdams School, Dr. Lila Fahlman School, and the future Dr. Anne Anderson High School are all located in adjacent communities.
