Calder is a community in northwest Edmonton, originally the Village of Calder until it was annexed into Edmonton in 1917. The community of Calder was developed in stages, with the western part of Calder being part of this original village developed through the first two decades of the 20th century, and the remainder being a block of land held in reserve by the Hudson’s Bay Company until finally developed in 1940-1950. The boundaries of Calder are at 132 and 127 Avenues to the north and south and 127 and 113a Streets to the west and east. Calder’s population is 4,004, with a wide range of all demographics represented. The housing types in this community are also quite varied, with around half the real estate in Calder being single-family detached homes and the remainder split between every other housing type, including duplexes, townhouses, and apartment/condo buildings.
Calder’s location immediately north of Yellowhead Trail allows easy access to other parts of Edmonton, including many industrial employment areas. Downtown Edmonton is also easy to get to from Calder, just a short drive south. Calder contains many parks and facilities, including sports fields, playgrounds, a skating rink, the Calder Community League, and Northwest Edmonton Seniors Society. Calder is also home to many churches: St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox, St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic, Church of God-New Hope, Berean Church of God, New Life Church, St. Edmund Roman Catholic, and the Chalmers-Castledowns United. Other nearby churches include the Queen of Martyrs Vietnamese Roman Catholic, Zion Baptist, World Mission Society, First United Pentecostal, Serbian Orthodox, and St. Emeric Hungarian Roman Catholic.
