Brander Gardens, formerly known as Glamorgan, is a small community in south-west Edmonton. The community is named in honour of George Brander, who came to Edmonton in 1921 and established a peony garden in the Bonnie Doon area. The community's boundaries are found at Whitemud Drive to the east, 51 Avenue to the south, and the North Saskatchewan River valley to the north and west. Riverbend Road bisects Brander Gardens and offers residents easy access to city bus services. Development in Brander Gardens occurred during the 1970s. Housing is made up of 30% single-family detached homes, with the remaining dwellings being multi-family housing structures such as row-housing and low-rise apartments with a few duplexes scattered throughout. The population is 2,474, with Brander Gardens residents split between homeowners and renters.
Brander Gardens' location allows easy access to commercial and employment opportunities throughout a large part of Edmonton via Whitemud Drive. Brander Garden residents are served by local businesses in the Riverbend Shopping Centre, which includes studios, a barber, veterinary hospital, eateries, and more. Many further amenities can be found in either direction via Whitemud Drive. The original design of the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights area, including Brander Gardens, was intended to be, in many respects, self-contained. Brander Gardens was designed with a number of strategically placed pathways, including a park-like pipeline right-of-way, in order to promote pedestrian and bicycle travel within the community. Easy access to the river valley park trails and Fort Edmonton Park, just to the north, give Brander Heights a unique feel and a lot of opportunities to be outside. The central focus of Brander Gardens is its main recreational park, which is the home to not only baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer fields, and playgrounds, but also the 4 schools located within the community; Brander Gardens School, Tempo School, Riverbend School and St. Monica Catholic School – Genesis Centre South Campus.
