Boyle Street is a community in east central Edmonton, named for John R. Boyle, an early resident of Edmonton who worked as a lawyer and later served on the city’s first municipal council. The community’s boundaries are found at 97 Street to the west, the LRT tracks to the north, 84 Street to the east, and Jasper Avenue and the river valley and Rowland Road to the south. Boyle Street is one of Edmonton's older inner-city communities, beginning development before 1900, with much of Edmonton's early commercial centre located in the south-west part of Boyle Street. Today, most of the community is higher-density use, with only 5% of Boyle Street real estate being single-family detached homes. The remainder is split between low-rise and mid- to high-rise apartments and condos. The Quarters revitalization plan approved in 2009 is bringing more condos and higher-end development to the west part of Boyle Street, nearer downtown. The population of Boyle Street is 6,740, with residents primarily being renters.
Boyle Street’s location allows easy access to NAIT, Grant MacEwan, University of Alberta, and Concordia University, while downtown Edmonton is also just a short drive or walk away. The community is highly walkable, and has excellent transit connections, including an LRT station at the north edge of Boyle Street. There are numerous commercial amenities within Boyle Street or nearby, including the large Kingsway Mall and the commercial centres of greater downtown Edmonton. Numerous community-level conveniences are located nearby, on 95 and 82 Streets and at Oliver Square. Boyle Street contains numerous parks and green spaces, most obviously the large North Saskatchewan River Valley, with Dawson Park and Louise McKinney Riverfront Park at the bottom. The only schools in Boyle Street are Alex Taylor School and St. Theresa of Calcutta Elementary School, while Riverdale School is also located nearby. Other notable landmarks in Boyle Street include the Edmonton Police Service headquarters, a large YMCA, the Boyle Street Plaza community centre, the Edmonton Chinatown Multicultural Centre, and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Barbara.
