Bonnie Doon is a community in south central Edmonton, named for the Scottish “pleasant, rolling countryside”. The community’s boundaries are found at the Mill Creek Ravine to the west, 82 (Whyte) Avenue to the south, and Connors Road and 83 Street to the north and east. Development here began as early as 1907, when the western portion of Bonnie Doon was annexed into the City of Strathcona. After Strathcona was amalgamated into the City of Edmonton in 1912, the city annexed the remainder of what is today known as Bonnie Doon. Construction progressed slowly, despite the extension of a streetcar line into the community, and by 1950, only half of Bonnie Doon had been developed. However, soon after this, a building boom brought rapid growth to complete the community's development. Today, much of the residential use across the community is still low-density, with around 45% of Bonnie Doon real estate comprised of single-family detached homes and nearly 20% duplexes. The remainder is made up of low- and mid-rise apartments and condos, primarily located along 82 Avenue or near Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre or Campus Saint-Jean. The population is 4,539, with Bonnie Doon residents split between homeowners and renters.
Bonnie Doon’s location allows easy access to downtown Edmonton, the University of Alberta, and to the trendy Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona district. The community is reasonably walkable, with excellent transit connections including an LRT station scheduled to open in 2020, and bicycle lanes running throughout the community offer further commuting options. The French campus of the University of Alberta, Campus Saint-Jean, is located centrally within Bonnie Doon. Shopping nearby includes the trendy area of Whyte Ave/Old Strathcona, which extends west from the southern border of the Bonnie Doon community. This district offers standard conveniences such as grocery, drug stores, banks, and food options, as well as boutique stores, restaurants, bars, and more. Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre is found at the east end of the community, offering more stores and services, and greater downtown Edmonton is located immediately across the river. Several community-level conveniences are also found within Bonnie Doon.
Bonnie Doon's north end is overlooking the river, while the western part of the community borders the Mill Creek Ravine. This ravine provides ample walking and recreational opportunities, as well as a picnic area and the Mill Creek Outdoor Pool. Several parks and green spaces can also be found scattered throughout Bonnie Doon, offering playgrounds, picnic facilities, sports fields, a skating rink, and the Bonnie Doon Community League. Two schools are located within Bonnie Doon, Rutherford School and École Maurice-Lavallée, while École Gabrielle-Roy, Vimy Ridge Academy School, Idylwilde School, Al Mustafa Academy, and Donnan School are also located nearby.
