Blue Quill Estates is a community in south Edmonton, named for the Cree Indian Chief Blue Quill of the Saddle Lake Indian Reserve, who traded in Edmonton in the 1890s. The community's boundaries are found at 119 Street to the east, the Whitemud Creek Ravine to the west, 23 Avenue to the south, and a utility corridor descending into the ravine to the north. Blue Quill Estates was developed primarily in the 1970s, and the community is made up of roughly 45% single-family detached homes and 35% low-rise apartment buildings, with the remainder found in scattered duplexes and townhouses. The population is 1,219, with Blue Quill Estates residents mostly owning their homes.
Blue Quill Estates' location allows easy access to much of south and west Edmonton via Whitemud Drive and Calgary Trail, and downtown Edmonton is just a short drive away along Gateway Boulevard. Good transit connections lead to the nearby Century Park LRT station. Many commercial amenities can be found nearby along the Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard corridor, including a Superstore, Save-On-Foods, T&T Supermarket, Homesense, Winners, Petland, Chapters, JYSK, Walmart, and numerous other stores, services, food options, banks, and more. There is another shopping area at Century Park, with a Safeway, boutique stores, and services, and the large Southgate Centre is located nearby. There is extensive green space in Blue Quill Estates, with a central park area within the community offering a playground and sports fields, and the Whitemud Creek Ravine bordering much of the community offers abundant recreational opportunities. The St. Theresa Catholic School and Sweet Grass School are located nearby.
