Blackburne is a small, secluded community in far south-west Edmonton, within the Heritage Valley area. The community is named for the Blackmud Creek, which runs across its south border, together with the old English word "burne" for stream or river. Its boundaries are found at the Anthony Henday Drive corridor to the north, Calgary Trail to the west, the Blackmud Creek Ravine to the south, and 111 Street to the east. The only way in and out of the community is via Blackburn Drive where it meets 111 Street. The community was developed primarily through the 1990s, while roughly two-thirds of the real estate here is made up of single-family detached homes and nearly 20% of duplexes, with the remainder split between townhouses and low-rise condo buildings. The population is 1,410, and the vast majority of Blackburne residents are homeowners.

Blackburne's location allows easy access across south and east Edmonton via the adjacent Anthony Henday Drive ring road, and Calgary Trail also provides a quick commute to Nisku, Leduc, and the Edmonton International Airport. Many commercial amenities are found nearby, whether around 111 Street at Ellerslie Road, or a little further at the Heritage Valley Town Centre, Currents at Windermere, or South Edmonton Common. Extensive green space exists within Blackburne, as the community is almost completely surrounded by the Blackmud Creek Ravine and the transportation corridors of the Anthony Henday Drive and Calgary Trail. The Ellerslie Rugby Park is nearby, and several schools are located in adjacent communities, including Roberta MacAdams School, Johnny Bright School, and Monsignor Fee Otterson Elementary/Junior High School.
