SOUTHWEST - Southgate

This area, centred around Southgate Shopping Centre, lies between the Experimental Farm and Calgary Trail, and north of Whitemud Drive. The community is bounded by the U of A Experimental Farm and the parkland around Whitemud Creek on its western boundary, giving the community a very leisurely feel. This area includes the neighbourhoods of (from east to west): Lansdowne, Malmo Plains, Lendrum, Pleasantview, and Empire Park. These were mostly built during the 1950s and 1960s, and comprise medium-sized single-family dwellings. Lansdowne, on the west side of the bottom tip of Experimental Farm is a newer development, liked for the green space on all sides of the neighbourhood.

SCHOOLS
The community has 5 public elementary schools and one Catholic elementary schools with a vocational high school for the Public Board at the eastern end of the community and regular high school and the Catholic board just outside the area. The public library is in Southgate Shopping Centre. The University of Alberta ("U of A") is readily accessible to the north. On the northwestern corner, beside the Experimental Farm is the Alberta School for the Deaf.

SHOPPING
Southgate Mall is the focal point for this community. This community has the added blessings of being close to the shopping treasures along Calgary Trail and not too far from West Edmonton Mall.

RECREATION
This area is blessed with larger parks scattered around the community, but lacks the sporting and cultural amenities right in the community. This area is truly quiet suburbia.
